Classic novels include the works of Arthur Conan Doyle, books like Kim, Kidnapped, Gulliver Travels, Jungle Book and more. Another such book included in the ranks is Jean Webster’s Daddy Long Legs. For me even today this book brings back fond memories. For those of you, who haven’t read this book, it is available for free on Project Gutenberg.
The protagonist of the book is an orphan named Jerusha “Judy” Abbott. She lived her life wearing hand downs and totally dependent on others but when she turns 18, some unknown benefactor sends her to college. She writes letters to this rich man and has never seen him and he is dubbed Daddy-Long-Legs.
I know the premise may not sound mighty interesting but to a teenage-ish me, this book was so mysterious and romantic. We see Judy grow and change in college, so many things are new to her and are even a party to her interest in a man she knows nothing about. This is a May-December romance since the hero is older and kind of an enigma. His name Jervis, isn’t that great too, but his total silent act seemed swoon-worthy to me. I do not know if this book will stand the test of time if I go back to read it now but it to me it is still a book that made my heart go all aflutter. Judy was the star of the book for me, ‘nough said.
