It’s definitely raining accolades for the Hyderabadi theater scion, Mohammad Ali Baig. He has been invited to play his globally acclaimed, ‘Quli:Dilon Ka Shazaada’ at Mumbai’s prestigious Nehru Center Theater Festival. Baig’s performance that got a three-round standing ovation from the world’s who’s who of theater in Europe last month is given the prime slot of Sunday (September 29) 7.30 pm at the fest that invites the country’s best productions in the 10-day theater fest starting on September 23rd in Mumbai featuring India’s most celebrated performers. The play had also created waves in Europe with its intimate wedding night scene between Quli and Bhagmati, a certain first from Indian stage abroad.
This is the fifth international festival that this Hyderabadi play is invited to.
‘Quli;Dilon ka Shahzaada’ is based on the love-legend of Hyderabad’s founder Quli Qutub Shah and Bhagmati, set in 16th century Golconda kingdom. Live Qawwali and shadow dances form a part of this period spectacle that is termed by the European media as ‘an Indian masterpiece’. The play is written by Mohammad Ali Baig and Chennai-based Noor, and translated in Urdu by Kadir Zaman. Directed by Mohammad Ali Baig, it has Baig playing Quli, Noor as Bhagmati, Vijay Prasad and Rashmi Seth in other significant roles. It is produced by Begum Razia Baig.
